WatchTSX ekes out narrow gain helped by high oil metal prices

TORONTO — The Toronto stock market ended slightly higher as energy stocks and miners advanced on the strength of higher oil and copper prices.The S&P/TSX composite index closed ahead 14.80 points to 14,957.21 — adding to gains last week after the U.S. Federal Reserve indicated it would continue with its wait-and-see approach to raising interest rates.The energy sector rose 0.9% as the May crude oil contract settled at its highest level in two weeks, rising 88 cents to US$47.45 a barrel.The April gold bullion contract rose US$3.10 to US$1,187.70 an ounce, while May copper advanced 2.9 cents to US$2.79 a pound, helping drive the TSX metals and mining sector 3.3% higher.On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average dipped 11.61 points at 18,116.04, while the Nasdaq slid 15.45 points to 5,010.97 and the S&P 500 index inched back 3.68 points to 2,104.42.The Canadian dollar was up 0.51 of a cent at 80.01 cents US.
