Central Arkansas’ Bassett Tabbed Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas senior forward Camille Bassett is the 2018 Southland Conference Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday in conjunction with the All-Academic First and Second Teams. Southland yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.A native of Vista, Calif., Bassett holds a 3.51 grade point average while majoring in communication science and disorders. She completes the sweep of the league’s top two awards after taking home Player of the Year honors in 2018. Now a two-time all-academic honoree, Bassett was also named Forward of the Year, finishing as the league leader in goals (9), points (21) and points per game (1.75) in conference play.The Bears and Abilene Christian both lead with five honorees. Houston Baptist earned a trio of selections while Lamar, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin all each had two selected. McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each collected one all-academic spot.Stephen F. Austin’s Carli Arthurs earned an automatic selection as a Second Team Academic All-American, the second academic All-America honor of her career. Northwestern State’s Jayden Wheeler and Ashley Hamilton of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi both earned automatic selections as members of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.Six members of this year’s selections are repeat honorees from past all-academic teams, including Bassett, Wheeler, Arthurs, Lamar’s Juliana Ocampo and Houston Baptist’s Megan Rickert.Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted.To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport’s championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions during the most recently completed season.
