Rasheeda Speaking’s Cynthia Nixon on Making Her Directing Debut

first_img Rasheeda Speaking Rasheeda Speaking, which also features Darren Goldstein and Patricia Connolly, plays The Pershing Square Signature Center through March 22. Opening night is set for February 11. Even though she’s psyched about her directorial debut, Nixon admits she likes keeping it simple: “It’s four characters; it’s one set. It’s an office that’s very realistic. People are seated at desks for a lot of the play. It’s sort of psychological warfare rather than big crowd scenes and fight scenes and dance numbers and that sort of thing.” “The themes of it are very big, but it’s very contained,” Nixon tells Broadway.com about Joel Drake Johnson’s play, which explores racial tension and office politics. She adds that she’s “eternally grateful” to New Group Artistic Director Scott Elliott, who saw her potential as a director and brought her the piece. “Whether I go on to direct a million plays or this is the only one I ever direct, this opportunity has been so wonderful.” Cynthia Nixon has never directed anything…until now. Best known for Sex and the City, Nixon’s been working as an actor nonstop since she was a teenager. Now the Tony winner is finally taking on the role of director with the New York premiere of the New Group’s Rasheeda Speaking, starring Tonya Pinkins and Dianne Wiest.center_img Show Closed This production ended its run on March 22, 2015 View Comments Related Showslast_img read more

Airport upgrades gather pace

first_img15 August 2008Airports Company South Africa has spent over R5-billion on improving facilities at airports around the country, and remains committed to delivering “quality aviation infrastructure” to meet the country’s needs for the 2010 Fifa World Cup and beyond.Presenting the company’s financial results in Johannesburg this week, Acsa chairman Franklin Sonn said the company had also started a five-year, R22-billion capital expenditure programme to cater for future growth in air travel.Of this amount, he said, about 62% would be spent in the first three years leading up to the World Cup.Also at the presentation was Transport Minister Jeff Radebe, who said the government would work closely with the airports operator. “We will stay close to Acsa to ensure business sustainability and timely delivery of the critical infrastructure necessary for the biggest marketing opportunity for our country, the 2010 Fifa world cup,” he said.Investment tripledHighlighting some of the key features of the financial year under review, Radebe said Acsa nearly tripled the previous year’s investment infrastructure developments by spending R5.2-billion.This sum included upgrades and new developments worth R1.7-billion on OR Tambo International Airport outside Johannesburg, R603-million on the Cape Town International Airport and R298-million on smaller domestic airports countrywide. In addition, R1.9-billion was allocated for both upgrades at Durban International Airport, as well as the greenfields international airport development at La Mercy, to the north of Durban.“We trust that you will continue focusing on efficiency in revenue and cost, while keeping your eyes on 2010 deliverables,” he said, commending the airports company for delivering good financial results despite the challenging economic environment.Non-aeronautical revenue growthAcsa MD Monhla Hlahla pointed out that infrastructure investment had increased by 215% to R5.2-billion, while revenue had increased by 9% to R2.797-billion.“Departing passenger volumes increased by 106% to R18.2-million [and] commercial and other non-aeronautical revenue increased by 20.2% to R1.4-billion,” she said. The robust growth in non-aeronautical revenue was mainly attributable to increases from activities such as property, core retail, car hire, as well as advertising.Acsa said that it continued to experience strong growth in traffic and non-aeronautical revenues due to strong positive growth in passenger numbers against a backdrop of positive economic growth, particularly in the first nine months of the financial year.“These results are good and reflective of the difficult operating and economic regulatory climate,” Hlahla said. “We will continue to focus on being efficient and deliver excellent service to our customers.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

crowdSPRING Adds Writing Jobs to Its Creative Services Marketplace

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market chris cameron Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#start#startups A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting In the last few months, we’ve focused from time to time on design and how it affects startups. One of the larger issues that comes up that goes hand-in-hand with design is the copywriting that accompanies that design. The importance of carefully crafted wording can not be understated; after all, the words are what actually speaks to your audience when they visit your site. Copywriting is as much an art and a skill as design is, and that’s why the crowdsourced design network crowdSPRING is now including copywriting jobs for bids on their site. As of Wednesday, the popular service opened up their designer’s club to include copywriters. Now clients looking to crowdsource text for any use can log onto crowdSPRING, set up a contest for users to submit their work to, set a reward price, and watch the entries roll in. The writing jobs can be as short as a name for company or text for a website, or as long as an essay, script or book. Various types of writing jobs are grouped into five categories: business, creative, editing, naming and online. So far only ten jobs have been submitted, but the site’s network has already feverishly kicked into gear, submitting nearly 1500 entries in just over a day. The current projects range in reward payout from $200 to $1500, the latter being a private project asking for a presentation. Another of these first ten projects posted comes from the City of Chicago which is hosting an elevator pitch contest on the site. Chicago-based Small businesses can submit a written version of their 30 second pitch for a chance to win $500 and a free booth at the upcoming Small Business Expo in July. “By using crowdSPRING for our annual competition, we’re hoping to get some amazing elevator pitches,” said Chicago City Treasurer Stephanie Neely. “We’re optimistic we’ll find the talent we need and build buzz around our competition, and hope the innovative submission process will help drive participation and attendance around our business plan competition.”Earlier this week, we discussed whether crowdsourcing and outsourcing were wise business practices for startups. Some argued that early stage startups may be too fragile to rely too heavily on these practices, but most agreed that if used correctly, crowdsourcing and outsourcing could be valuable tools to startups. In this light, startups can certainly benefit from these new services provided by crowdSPRING.Startups without the sufficient staff to cover media and public relations can use the service to produce emails, newsletters, blogs and other materials they may not be able to create effectively on their own. First time entrepreneurs who’ve never written a business plan can now use the site to crowdsource a solution instead of toiling over it themselves, provided they give the applicants sufficient information regarding the company. At the very least, an entry like this could be modified or used as a starting point for a more involved plan. However, a startup may be reluctant to crowdsource business materials for fear of revealing private business information to the site’s users. What if a user sees a job for a business plan detailing a startups roadmap for success and decides to steal the idea? According to crowdSPRING, they have been forced to ban users for violating the site’s IP rules in the past.“We work together with our entire community… to identify possible violations of intellectual property,” the site says. “We expect that people in our community will share the community’s core values, which includes the protection of and respect for intellectual property.”It seems that IP security is not something crowdSPRING takes lightly, as this blog post makes very clear. For any business, theft of intellectual property is an inherent risk with oursourcing and crowdsouring, but it would seem that the service is going to great lengths to ensure their users are safe. The Hustler’s Playbook: Education Over Entertainment

first_imgThe decisions you make determine the outcomes you create in your life.Lean BackNon-hustlers choose to spend their time being entertained. They are “lean back” people. They watch a lot of television. They can tell you what’s hot, what’s not, and what you are missing. When they’re not watching television, they spend their time on the small screen of infinite distractions. They browse and browse and browse like there is no tomorrow. They never miss a sporting event, and they are up to speed on players, coaches, stats, and the surrounding drama. Then, there are video games. There is nothing wrong with entertainment. Only too much entertainment is a problem. That time would be better invested somewhere else than spent on empty calories.Lean ForwardHustlers make a different choice. They choose to educate themselves. They are “lean forward” people. They read books. Lots of books. They read widely so they can be fluent in conversational with people of all walks of life. They learn how to think, and they learn how to judge the usefulness of ideas. Hustlers take online courses, they go to live events, and they hire coaches. They build mastermind groups so they can learn from their peers and get a perspective on how they’re doing from people who are going to be honest with them in order to spur their growth and development. Hustlers write, too. They keep journals, and they process their thinking. This is not to say that hustlers don’t spend time on entertainment. They just spend less time leaning back being entertained because they are too busy leaning forward and making things happen. When they play, even the play is usually centered around their personal growth.Lean forward. Educate yourself. You are the only real asset you will ever have for producing the results you want in your life.last_img read more

How to Bank Your Insights and Ideas for the Future

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now In business-to-business sales, selling effectively now requires that you have business acumen and situational knowledge (something like experience). Your goal should to be a 52% subject matter expert as it pertains to your company’s products and solutions (and that percentage should improve over time) and a 100% subject matter expert at the intersection of your industry and your client’s industry. It would be best if you had information disparity, which means you know more than your clients or prospects. What is contained and conveyed to you in this paragraph is no longer optional, and it hasn’t been for a long time now.To become a subject matter expert, you need to pay attention to the trends in your industry, infusing what you know into your sales conversations. A lack of knowledge will undermine your goal of creating opportunities, creating a preference, and win your dream client’s business or your existing client’s new initiative. Gaining that expertise means studying. If you want to be relevant, you need to read, collect, study, and synthesize.ReadingIt is not possible for you to be a subject matter expert without reading. You may have plenty of experience in your industry, and you may have even more experience in a sales role. However, without being able to speak to the trends that are now impacting your dream client’s business (or soon will be), short of finding them already inclined to change, you will struggle mightily to create a case for change. You are reading to gain knowledge and bank insights. You have to read the newspapers (an unusual word to still use now that much of our news comes from online sources). The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are excellent sources, as both cover business, economics, and politics. The New York Times does more reporting on science and technology and health, helpful trends in some verticals.Online sources are also helpful, but stay away from the purely political outlets, something that seems to plague all news sources now, but some are pure opinion-shaping as it pertains to politics (a good enough reason to avoid them–and the negativity that can infect you with the same over time).By reading widely, you will find trends that are going to help you make a case for change and shape how your client views their world and their choices. An aversion to reading will stunt your growth as a salesperson.Note: Reading here might also include listening and watching.CollectingIt isn’t enough just to read. You also have to start collecting proof that what you say is true and how it shaped your views and values about the decisions you help your clients take. When you tell your client something, it’s your opinion. What you say might be suspect because your prospect recognizes your intention is is to sell them something. However, when Gartner says something is true, it’s true. When CNBC reports it, it’s a fact. By collecting third-party proof and data, you are banking insights and ideas for the future.Win customers away from your competition. Check out Eat Their LunchStudyingYou must know more than your clients, which is the prerequisite for them choosing you as their strategic partner. When you know a scant more than your client, there is too little disparity for you to be compelling. What do you believe should be compelling your client to change? What change should they be making? Why is one choice better than some other? What has your reading and studying taught you?Marketing can help you with the slide decks and some insights, but if you are not working on developing the business acumen and situational knowledge yourself, you cannot be a real subject matter expert.SynthesizeYou must develop a theory of why it is more difficult for your client to produce the results they used to have no trouble generating in the halcyon days of yesteryear. You don’t have to be a college professor or something resembling a researcher at a prestigious think tank (although it wouldn’t hurt you to have enough subject matter expertise that you might be confused for one). You do, however, have to synthesize what you read, listen to, watch, and study. The synthesis allows you to make connections between ideas, trends, and all the factors that change over time–and force your client to change along with them.Bank your insights, building an arsenal of information that informs your views, your values, and your recommendations–and that will help you do the same for your clients.last_img read more
